Help! What chaos the world is in… While world leaders are messing up big time, it seems like there is not much we can do ourselves. But what if it would be entirely up to you? What would the world look like then?
In the game The New City you go back to Europe in 1945. Towns are destroyed and need to be rebuilt. You are staying in a shelter, together with other citizens from all walks of life. Imagine you are an artist who used to be a resistance fighter, or a Jewish survivor who found his house occupied by strangers upon his return, or a civil servant who prefers to keep quiet about what she did during the war.
What kind of city would you prefer? Would you construct a memorial site for those who fell, or would you rather spend the money on new businesses and factories? What sort of schools would you like? Is there room for dreams and lofty ideals or would you stick to the more practical? One thing is for sure: you will have to come to an agreement with the others.
The New City is a game about forward thinking and shaping the future that can be played by 15 – 35 participants. Every participant steps into the shoes of a ‘post-war character’. Led by a game leader, the group will have to negotiate and come up with solutions for the ideal city. It won’t be an easy task, as many wounds are not yet healed and hunger, scarcity and distrust prevail.
The New City is organised for and in collaboration with secondary schools, schools for higher professional education and universities. Students first visit the theatre performance and then play the game. Are you interested in bringing this game to your school? Send us an email at: info@autresdirections.nl
There are also game afternoons that are open to everyone. Dates can be found below. Or organise it yourself, using our toolkit.
